Why Are Giraffes So Tall?

Giraffes are the tallest animals on land! They have very long necks and legs that help them reach the tastiest leaves way up high in the tallest trees. Imagine you want to eat an apple from the top of a tree, but you can only reach the low branches. Giraffes don’t have this problem because their height lets them eat leaves that other animals can't reach.

How Do Giraffes Eat?

  • Their necks are very long—about 6 feet (2 meters) long!
  • They use their long tongues, which are about 18 inches (45 centimeters), to grab leaves from branches.
  • Because they eat leaves from tall trees, they don’t have to compete with many other animals for food.

So, giraffes are tall because it helps them find yummy food that’s high up in the trees where other animals can’t get to.
