What Are Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are one of the main types of food that give our bodies energy. Think of carbohydrates as fuel for a car – they help our bodies run, play, and even think!

Where Do Carbohydrates Come From?

Carbs are found in many foods like bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables. When we eat these foods, our body changes the carbs into a sugar called glucose, which is what gives us energy.

Types of Carbohydrates

  • Simple Carbohydrates: These are sugars found in candies, fruits, and milk. They give quick energy.
  • Complex Carbohydrates: These are found in foods like whole grains, beans, and vegetables. They give energy that lasts longer.

Why Are Carbohydrates Important?

Carbs are important because they:

  • Give us energy to run, play, and think.
  • Help keep our brain working well.
  • Are part of healthy foods like fruits and veggies.

Remember

Eating good carbohydrates from healthy foods helps us stay strong and active. It's best to eat more complex carbs (like vegetables and whole grains) and less sugary treats.
