How Octopuses Change Colour to Hide

Did you know that octopuses are amazing at playing hide and seek? They can change the colour of their skin to match the things around them, so it’s really hard for other animals to see them!

How Do They Do This?

Octopuses have special skin that helps them change colour. Their skin has tiny little layers called:

  • Chromatophores: These are like tiny paint pots filled with different colours like red, yellow, and brown. When the octopus wants to change colour, it squeezes these paint pots to show the colours more or less.
  • Iridescent Cells (Iridophores and Leucophores): These cells help the octopus reflect light, which can make their skin look shiny or change colour too, like a rainbow.

Why Do Octopuses Change Colour?

1. To Hide: By changing colour and texture, octopuses blend in with rocks, coral, or sand. This helps them hide from bigger animals that might want to eat them.

2. To Talk: Sometimes, octopuses use colours to send messages to other octopuses, like warning them or showing they want to mate.

Isn’t That Cool?

Next time you see pictures or videos of an octopus, remember they are like nature’s little magicians, changing colour to keep safe and communicate.
