Learn why koalas sleep for most of the day and only eat eucalyptus leaves, explained simply for children aged 10.
Koalas are animals that spend a lot of time sleeping—sometimes up to 18-22 hours a day! That might seem like a lot, but there are good reasons for it.
First, koalas eat mostly eucalyptus leaves, which don’t have a lot of energy or nutrients. Since their food doesn’t give them much energy, koalas have to save energy by resting a lot.
Sleeping slows down their bodies and helps them not use too much energy. It also helps them digest the tough eucalyptus leaves, which can be hard to break down.
Koalas almost only eat eucalyptus leaves. These leaves are a special choice because they are everywhere in the koala’s home in Australia. But eucalyptus leaves are very tough and have chemicals that can be bad for other animals.
Koalas have special stomachs that can break down these tough leaves and get the nutrients they need. Even though eucalyptus leaves don’t have much energy, koalas have adapted to eat them and live on them.
Isn’t it cool how koalas have adapted to their environment by eating special leaves and sleeping a lot?
