What is a Landfill?
A landfill is a special place where people throw away their trash and garbage. It is like a big hole in the ground where all our waste is dumped and covered with soil.
Problems Landfills Cause
- Pollution of Soil: When trash breaks down, harmful chemicals can leak into the soil. This can hurt plants and animals that live in the ground.
- Pollution of Water: Toxic liquids called leachate can seep from landfills and contaminate nearby rivers, lakes, and underground water, which is unsafe for both animals and people.
- Air Pollution: When garbage rots, it produces gases like methane that can cause air pollution and contribute to global warming, which makes Earth's temperature rise.
- Bad Smells: Landfills often create strong, unpleasant smells that make nearby areas uncomfortable to live in.
- Harm to Animals: Animals can get sick by eating trash or getting trapped in waste materials.
- Space Problems: Landfills take up a lot of space and sometimes we run out of places to put our trash.
Why Should We Care?
Landfills may seem like a simple way to get rid of trash, but they can harm the earth and living things. That's why people are trying to reduce waste, recycle more, and find better ways to manage garbage.
