How Do Animals Stay Cool in Hot Places?
Some animals live where it gets really hot, like in deserts. To stay cool and not get too thirsty, they have special ways to handle the heat:
- Camels: Camels have a big hump on their backs. Many people think the hump stores water, but it actually stores fat. This fat helps camels go a long time without food and water. Also, camels can survive with less water than many animals and can keep their bodies cool even in hot weather.
- Elephants: Elephants have huge ears that they flap like big fans. When they flap their ears, it helps cool the blood inside them, which lowers their body temperature and keeps them from getting too hot.
- Jerboas: Jerboas are small animals that live in hot deserts. They stay cool by hiding in burrows underground during the hottest times of the day because it’s cooler underground.
How Do Animals Stay Warm in Cold Places?
Other animals live where it is very cold, like in Arctic areas with ice and snow. They have ways to keep warm so they don't freeze:
- Arctic Foxes: These foxes have very thick fur that covers their whole body. The fur traps warm air close to their skin, which helps keep them warm even in freezing weather.
- Walruses: Walruses have a thick layer of fat called blubber under their skin. This blubber keeps their bodies insulated and warm when they swim in icy water.
