A Walk in the Woods
For 3-year-olds
We are going on a short, happy walk in the woods. Let’s see, hear, and touch new things together!
Before we go
- Put on comfy shoes and a hat.
- Bring water, a small snack, and a grown-up to hold your hand.
- Take a small bag for treasures (only things that are already on the ground).
Step-by-step on the path
- Hold hands with your grown-up. Walk slowly on the path.
- Look up at the tall trees. Say, "Hello, tree!"
- Listen quietly for birds or wind. Can you hear a rustle?
- Touch different things carefully: a rough bark, a soft leaf, a smooth rock.
- Smell the air—does it smell fresh or like flowers?
- Count steps, or count tree trunks: 1, 2, 3...
Fun, simple games
- I Spy: "I spy something green." Find it together.
- Follow the Leader: copy the grown-up—step over a stick, tiptoe, hop on a leaf.
- Nature Shapes: find a round rock, a long stick, or a tiny leaf.
Safety rules
- Stay on the path and hold hands.
- Don’t touch mushrooms or plants unless a grown-up says it’s okay.
- If you see an animal, watch quietly—don’t chase it.
Treasure rules
Only pick up things that are already on the ground (fallen leaves, sticks, rocks). Leave living plants and animals where they are.
After the walk
- Look at your treasures together and talk about what you liked best.
- Wash hands before snack time and tell a short story about your favorite moment.
Have fun! Keep words short and make it a calm, happy adventure.
