Firefighters
Firefighters are helpers. They keep people and animals safe.
What they look like
- They wear a big hat called a helmet.
- They wear a thick jacket and pants to stay safe from fire.
- They wear strong boots and gloves.
What they drive
They drive a red fire truck. The truck has bright lights and a loud siren that says "woo-woo".
What they do
- Put out fires with water.
- Help people who are hurt.
- Save pets and animals.
Let's play and learn
Try this little game:
- Wear a jacket or a hat as your firefighter outfit.
- Say "woo-woo" like the siren.
- Pretend to hold a hose and say, "I help!"
Safety tips (very simple)
- If there is smoke, go outside with a grown-up right away.
- If your clothes catch fire: Stop. Drop. Roll. (Practice rolling on the floor with a grown-up.)
- Have a special meeting place outside your home where everyone goes.
For grown-ups: Teach the child your local emergency number (for example, 911 in the U.S.), make and practice a home escape plan, and always supervise drills. Reassure the child that firefighters are friendly helpers who keep people safe.
Firefighters are caring helpers. They make sure we are safe.
