Hello! Soil is the soft, brown stuff on the farm.

Soil has tiny rocks, water, air, bits of old leaves, and little living friends like worms and bugs.

Plants grow in soil. Their roots drink water from the soil and hold the plant up. Farmers grow vegetables and grass in soil so animals and people can eat.

Worms and bugs help make the soil healthy. They mix the soil so plants can get air and water.

Fun activity: Touch a little soil. Is it crumbly or sticky? Plant one seed in a small cup, give it a little water, put it in the sun, and watch it grow. Don’t forget to wash your hands when you’re done!
