Quick Counting Tips for an 8‑Year‑Old in a Busy Savannah
Counting lots of animals can feel tricky, but you can do it fast with a few smart tricks. Try these steps:
- Look and calm down. Take one deep breath and pick one side to start (left or right).
- Divide the scene into small zones. Pretend the grass is cut into 4 or 6 squares. Count each square one at a time.
- Count in groups. If animals are in groups, count by 2s or 5s. For example: 5, 10, 15 — faster than counting one by one.
- Use tally marks. Draw a | for each animal and cross four with a / on the fifth. That makes it easy to add later.
- Keep a finger marker. Use your finger or a pencil to point so you don’t count the same animal twice.
- Estimate big crowds. If there are lots, make a small sample: count animals in a tiny area, then multiply. Example: 6 animals in one patch of grass; there are 4 similar patches, so about 6 × 4 = 24.
- Check your answer. Quickly recount zones or groups to be sure.
