Easy explanation for a 6-year-old

Footprints are the marks animals leave when they walk on soft ground like mud, sand, or snow. We can be little detectives and learn who made the prints by looking at:

  1. Size — big or small?
  2. Shape — round, long, with toes, or with claws?
  3. Toes — how many?
  4. Pattern — are the prints close together or far apart?
  5. Where they are — near water, in the woods, or in the yard?

Try looking at a print and saying out loud: "Is it a bird? A dog? A deer?" You can also make prints with playdough or paint to compare.
