How to match animal tracks (for 6-year-olds)

Let's be a nature detective and find out which animal made the footprints!

  1. Look at the size: Are the tracks big or small? Big tracks might be a big animal. Small tracks might be a small animal.
  2. Count the toes: How many toes do you see? Some animals have four toes, some have three, and birds usually have three or four too.
  3. Check for claws: Do you see little marks like nails? That can tell you if the animal has claws.
  4. See the pattern: Do the footprints go in a straight line, hop, or look messy? Rabbits hop (two big prints together), dogs walk in a line, and birds leave little three-toed prints.
  5. Compare with pictures: Look at pictures of tracks and see which one looks the same as the prints you found.
  6. Make your own prints: Press your hand, a toy animal foot, or playdough into soft mud or sand to see how prints look. This helps you learn!

Easy matching game

  1. Print or draw pictures of 4–6 animal tracks and the animals that made them.
  2. Mix them up face down. Turn one track card over and try to find the animal that matches it.
  3. If it matches, keep the pair. If not, turn them back and try again.
  4. Make it fun: count toes out loud, whisper like a detective, or hop like the animal!

Seven kid-friendly taglines (rephrased for a 6-year-old)

  • 1. "Whose footprints are these?"
  • 2. "Follow the little feet!"
  • 3. "Find the animal that made the prints!"
  • 4. "Be a footprint detective!"
  • 5. "Big feet or small feet? Let’s see!"
  • 6. "Count the toes to find your friend!"
  • 7. "Did it hop, walk, or run? Find out!"

Have fun outside and remember: look, count, and compare. Happy tracking!
