The Magical Watch Beaver
Once there was a little beaver with a shiny, magical watch. The watch glowed and tick-tocked: tick… tock… It helped the beaver know when it was time to work and when it was time for a snack. The beaver chewed sticks with its strong teeth, stacked them, and packed soft mud to make a cozy dam. The dam made a calm pond where ducklings could splash and frogs could sing.
How the Beaver Builds a Dam — Let’s Pretend!
- Find sticks and soft mud: Pretend to look like the beaver. Say, “Where are the sticks?” (You can use little blocks, toy sticks, or rolled-up paper.)
- Chomp the sticks: Pretend to chomp with your teeth—"chomp, chomp!" (You can lightly bite a soft cracker or just pretend.)
- Stack the sticks across the water: Put your blocks or sticks side by side to make a wall. Imagine water on one side and dry land on the other.
- Pack mud and stones: Use playdough or small pebbles to press between the sticks. This stops the water and makes the dam strong.
- Watch the pond fill: The magical watch goes "glow!" and the water slows. The pond is calm and the animals are happy.
Little Dam Craft (With a Grown-Up)
- Get a shallow tray or a plate.
- Put a little water on one side.
- Use blocks or toy sticks to build a line across the tray.
- Press playdough around the sticks to stop the water from moving.
- Watch the water slow down—hooray!
Sounds and Moves
Make beaver sounds and moves: chomp your teeth (gently), wiggle your tail like a big flat beaver tail, and wear your pretend magical watch that goes "tick-tock-glow!"
Questions to Ask
Can you chomp like the beaver? Where will you put your sticks? Who will live in the new pond?
Great job! You built a dam just like the magical watch beaver. Give yourself a clap and a happy splash!
