Hi! Let’s learn about underground trains (subways)

An underground train is a train that travels under the ground in tunnels. People ride them to go to school, parks, and work quickly without traffic. Some people call them the subway or the metro.

How an underground train moves (simple steps)

  • 1. Rails and wheels: The train sits on two metal tracks (rails). The wheels keep it moving straight along the rails.
  • 2. Electricity gives it power: Most underground trains use electricity. Power comes from a metal rail or a wire and makes the train go vroom!
  • 3. Driver or computer: A driver or a computer controls when the train starts, stops, and how fast it goes.
  • 4. Signals and signs: Lights and signs tell the driver when it is safe to go or stop. These help trains stay safe and on time.
  • 5. Tunnels: The trains travel in tunnels under the city, so the streets above stay clear for cars and people.

Main parts you can see

  • Carriages: The rooms where people sit or stand.
  • Doors: They open and close at stations so people can get on and off.
  • Driver’s cab: Where the driver sits (not always in driverless trains).
  • Platform: The place at the station where people wait for the train.

Simple safety rules for kids

  • Always stay behind the yellow line on the platform.
  • Hold an adult’s hand if you are small.
  • Wait until the train stops and the doors open before moving forward.
  • Don’t touch the rails or step on them — they are dangerous.
  • If you feel scared, tell an adult or find a station worker for help.

Fun facts (short!)

  • Some underground trains are so long they carry hundreds of people at once.
  • Trains can be very quiet and smooth, but you might feel a little bump when they start.
  • Subways help keep cars off the street so cities are less crowded.

Easy drawing and build activity (make your own mini underground train)

What you need: paper, crayons or markers, scissors, tape, a shoebox (or a cardboard box), and small toy trains or paper train cutouts.

  1. Draw a long train on paper and color it. Cut it out.
  2. Turn the shoebox on its side. This is your tunnel.
  3. Decorate the outside of the box like a city with buildings and roads.
  4. Place your paper train or toy train inside the tunnel. Push it gently along the bottom—this shows how it travels through the tunnel under the city.
  5. Try making a station by cutting a small door in the box so the train can stop and people can get on and off.

Quick questions you can try to answer

  • Q: Where does an underground train travel? A: In tunnels under the ground.
  • Q: What makes most underground trains move? A: Electricity.
  • Q: What should you do on the platform? A: Stand behind the yellow line and wait for the doors to open.

If you want, draw a picture of an underground train and tell me what colors you used. I can give you another fun activity to try next!
