City Zoom Squad!

Hi! Lets learn about the city vehicles you see every day. These vehicles help people, keep the city clean, and keep us safe.

Meet the City Zoom Squad

  • Fire truck — Big and usually red. Carries firefighters, ladders, and hoses. Siren sounds loud so people move out of the way. They put out fires and rescue people and animals.
  • Ambulance — Usually white with red or green stripes. It takes sick or hurt people to the hospital. The siren helps it get through traffic quickly.
  • Police car — Often black and white or blue. Police officers help keep everyone safe and catch bad guys. Their lights flash and their sirens say to move over.
  • School bus — Big and yellow. Takes kids to and from school. You must stay seated and wear your seatbelt if there is one.
  • City bus — Moves many people around the city. Pay the driver or use a pass, and let people off before you get on.
  • Garbage truck — Picks up trash and recycling. It rumbles and sometimes makes noises when it lifts bins. Keep a safe distance from the back.
  • Taxi — A car that people pay to ride in when they need to go somewhere quickly.
  • Delivery truck — Brings packages and boxes to stores and homes.
  • Tow truck — Helps move cars that are broken or parked in the wrong place.
  • Street sweeper — Cleans the roads so they are safe and neat.
  • Construction vehicles — Like bulldozers, cranes, and diggers. They build roads and buildings. They are large and loud, so stay back.
  • Bicycle and motorcycle — Smaller and faster than walking. Wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road.

Why the City Zoom Squad is important

These vehicles help keep our city working. They put out fires, take care of sick people, pick up trash, move things, and help people get around. Without them the city would not be safe or clean.

Safety Rules Around City Vehicles

  • Always stay on the sidewalk until it is safe to cross the street.
  • Look left, right, and left again before crossing. Hold an adults hand if you are young.
  • If you hear a siren or see flashing lights, move to the side of the road and wait for the vehicle to pass.
  • Dont play near parked trucks, construction sites, or busy roads.
  • Wear a seatbelt in cars and buses. Wear a helmet on bikes and scooters.
  • Stay back from the back of garbage trucks and large trucks because drivers may not see you.

Three Fun Activities

  1. I-Spy City Vehicles — Go for a walk with an adult and see how many different vehicles you can spot. Make a list or draw them.
  2. Draw Your Favorite Vehicle — Use crayons or markers to make a bright fire truck, ambulance, or bus. Add a person and a dog if you want!
  3. Sound Game — Make siren sounds with your voice. Try alto-woo woo, or long-woo. Ask a grown-up to play and guess which vehicle makes which sound.
