Hello! Let’s make £10 with coins
Good job — you already know £1 = 100p and £10 = 1000p. Now let’s use the coins you have: 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 50p.
Step 1: Know each coin
- 1p = 1 penny
- 2p = 2 pennies
- 5p = 5 pennies
- 10p = 10 pennies
- 50p = 50 pennies
Step 2: Make £1 (100p) — then do that ten times
If you can make £1, you can make £10 by making the same pile ten times:
- Two 50p coins make £1 because 50p + 50p = 100p.
- Ten 10p coins make £1 because 10 × 10p = 100p.
- Twenty 5p coins make £1 because 20 × 5p = 100p.
- Fifty 2p coins make £1 because 50 × 2p = 100p.
- One hundred 1p coins make £1 because 100 × 1p = 100p.
So to make £10, do any of those £1 piles ten times. For example, 20 times 50p = 1000p so 20 × 50p = £10.
Easy ways to make £10 (short list)
- 20 × 50p = £10 (this uses the fewest coins)
- 100 × 10p = £10
- 200 × 5p = £10
- 500 × 2p = £10
- 1000 × 1p = £10
Try a fun practice
Can you make £1 in three different ways using the coins? Then make 10 piles like that to get £10. If you want, tell me the ways you find and I will check them!
Well done — you’re a great coin counter!
