Why sloths climb down to poop (for a 7-year-old)
Sloths live high up in trees and move very slowly. Even so, once about every week they climb down the tree to go to the bathroom. Here’s what that looks like and some reasons why they do it.
How a sloth does it — step by step
- Decides its time: After many days of eating leaves and slowly digesting food, the sloths body is ready to poop.
- Climbs down very slowly: The sloth carefully climbs down the tree trunk to the ground. It moves so slowly because it saves energy and stays quiet so predators dont notice it.
- Goes to the same spot: Sloths usually go to the base of the same tree to poop. They often stay on the ground only a short time.
- Climbs back up: After pooping, the sloth climbs back up into the branches and goes on with its slow day.
Why do they do this only about once a week?
- They eat very slow food: Sloths eat leaves that dont have many nutrients, so their digestion is very slow. That means they only need to poop about once a week.
- To save energy and stay safe: Moving is hard for them, so they stay in trees most of the time. Coming down only rarely uses less energy and helps them stay hidden from animals that might eat them.
- Possible helpers: Scientists think poop might help tiny insects and algae that live with the sloth. Some of those insects use the poop to lay eggs. The algae can help the sloth hide by making its fur look green. This is still something scientists study, so were not 100% sure about every reason.
Fun facts
- Sloths are super slow to save energy.
- Their fur sometimes looks green because tiny algae grow in it.
- Going to the ground is dangerous because big birds and cats in the forest can find them more easily, so they do it rarely.
