Boundless Space — Let’s Explore!

Space is the very big place outside our world. It is dark and has lots of shiny stars. Space is called "boundless" because it goes on and on and we cannot find an edge.

  1. What is space? Space is the empty place above the sky. It is like a giant, dark blanket with tiny lights (stars) sprinkled on it.
  2. What are stars, planets, and the Moon? Stars are like faraway night-lights. Planets are big round balls that go around stars. The Moon is a ball that goes around Earth and looks bright at night.
  3. How do people visit space? People go to space in rockets. Astronauts wear special suits and float inside the rocket. We need grown-ups and lots of training to go there.
  4. What does it feel like? In space you float instead of walking. It is like pretending to fly. On Earth you can jump and come down, but in space you can drift slowly.

Fun Things to Try (with a grown-up)

  • Make a paper rocket: Roll paper into a tube, draw colors, and tape a paper cone on top. Pretend to count down 3..2..1.. blast off!
  • Draw the night sky: Use crayons to make a big dark page and add many stars. Make a big bright Moon.
  • Pretend to float: Lie on a soft couch or bed, close your eyes, and pretend you are floating past stars. Ask a grown-up to do it with you.
  • Star story: Make up a short story about a friendly star or a tiny astronaut who visits a planet.
  • Look up together: At night, with a grown-up, look at the sky and point to the Moon and bright stars. Say "hello" to space!

Safety note: Always do space activities with a grown-up nearby.

Quick, Calm Imagination

Close your eyes. Breathe in slowly, breathe out. Imagine a little rocket. You get in. The rocket goes up and up. You see many twinkling stars. Wave to a smiling star. When you are ready, open your eyes.

Space is big and full of wonder. You can learn about it by playing, drawing, and asking big questions. What would you name your rocket?
