Why space is called “boundless”

Space is called boundless because it keeps going and going — we don’t find an edge or a border where it suddenly stops. Imagine trying to walk to the end of space. No matter how far you go, there’s always more to go to. That’s what people mean by boundless.

Easy examples to help you picture it

  • Surface of a ball: Think about an orange. If an ant walks around the orange it never falls off an edge. It can keep walking and walking. That helps us understand how something can go on without an edge.
  • A big room with sprinkles: Imagine a huge dark room. Most of the room has nothing in it. Then sprinkle tiny shiny stars and some big round planets like balls. That is what the real space is like — mostly empty with stars and planets sprinkled in.

Some simple facts

  • The Sun is very far away, but light from the Sun reaches us in about 8 minutes. That helps show how big space is.
  • Even though space looks empty, there are tiny bits of gas, dust, and invisible light and energy all around.

A fun balloon activity (try with an adult)

  1. Put some dots on a deflated balloon with a marker (those are your stars).
  2. Blow the balloon up a little. The dots move farther apart, but there is still no edge on the surface where they sit — just more space between dots.
  3. This helps show how space can get bigger and how the stars can be far apart with no edge.

If you want, draw your own picture of space with lots of empty black and tiny shiny dots. Ask more questions — they’re great for learning!
