Camels are called "ships of the desert"

Think of a big boat that carries people across the water. A camel does a similar job on the sandy desert.

Step by step:

  1. They carry people and things. People ride camels or put bags on their backs, just like a boat carries people and boxes.
  2. They walk on soft sand. Camels have big, wide feet so they don’t sink into the sand.
  3. They save energy and water. A camel’s hump is like a special backpack that helps it stay healthy when food and water are scarce.
  4. They keep sand out of their face. Camels have long eyelashes and noses that can close so sand does not bother them.
  5. They can go a long way. Camels are very strong and can travel far across hot deserts without much water.

Because camels can carry people and travel across the desert like boats travel across the sea, people call them "ships of the desert."

Try this game:

  • Pretend to be a camel: put a pillow on your back as a "hump" and walk slowly with big steps over a blanket (the "desert").
  • Count how many big steps you can take before you need a silly water break!

Fun fact: When very thirsty, a camel can drink a lot of water very quickly.
