What is a portable (personal) life support system?
Imagine a magic backpack that helps a person stay safe and alive when the air or the place around them is not safe. A portable or personal life support system is like that backpack. It gives things a person needs to live, and it takes away things they don’t need.
What does this "backpack" do? (Simple steps)
- Gives fresh air: It can give oxygen to breathe, like a little air supply in a backpack.
- Takes away bad air: It removes carbon dioxide (the air you breathe out) so you don’t breathe it again.
- Keeps you warm or cool: It helps control temperature so you don’t get too hot or too cold.
- Supplies water or removes sweat: Some systems give small amounts of water or take away sweat so you stay comfortable.
- Power and talking: It gives electricity for small fans and radios so you can talk to friends or helpers.
- Alarms and safety: If something goes wrong, it can make a noise or light to tell you.
Two easy examples
- Astronaut spacesuit: When astronauts walk on the Moon, their suit has a Portable Life Support System (PLSS) on the back. It acts like a backpack that provides air, keeps them the right temperature, and lets them talk to people in the spaceship.
- Medical oxygen tank: Some people who have trouble breathing carry a small oxygen tank. It gives them extra oxygen so they can breathe easier. This is a simple kind of personal life support.
Fun pretend-play activity
Make your own pretend life-support backpack:
- Use a small backpack or pillowcase as the "life support pack."
- Put a water bottle inside (this is your water supply).
- Attach a small fan or clothespin as a "cooling fan."
- Use a toy walkie-talkie or make one from cardboard for talking.
- Practice walking around slowly and saying what your backpack is doing to help you.
Quick questions to check your understanding
- What is one thing the life support backpack gives you? (Answer: oxygen or air)
- Why might an astronaut need a life support pack? (Answer: there is no air to breathe on the Moon or in space)
- Can you name a place where a person might use a portable life support system? (Answer: in space, or if someone needs extra oxygen)
If you want, draw a picture of your own life-support backpack and label what each part does. That will help you remember!
