The Solar System (for a 7-year-old)
Space is huge and full of stars and planets. Inside space there is our Solar System. The Sun is in the middle and eight planets go around it. Let’s learn about them step by step!
1. The Sun
The Sun is a giant, hot ball of glowing gas. It gives us light and warmth so life can live on Earth. The Sun is in the middle and everything in the Solar System moves around it.
2. The eight planets (in order from the Sun)
- Mercury — Closest to the Sun. Small and very hot on the side facing the Sun.
- Venus — Bright in the sky and covered in thick clouds. Very hot and windy.
- Earth — Our home. It has water, air, and living things.
- Mars — The red planet. It is dusty and has big volcanoes and canyons.
- Jupiter — The biggest planet. It is a gas giant and has a big storm called the Great Red Spot.
- Saturn — Famous for its beautiful rings made of ice and rock.
- Uranus — A cold, blue-green planet that spins on its side.
- Neptune — The farthest of the eight. Very cold and very windy.
3. How they move
All the planets move around the Sun in paths called orbits. They keep moving because the Sun’s gravity pulls on them — like an invisible string that keeps them going around.
4. Other things in the Solar System
- Moons — Many planets have moons that go around them (Earth has one moon).
- Asteroids — Rocks that float in space, mostly in a belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- Comets — Icy balls that make bright tails when they come near the Sun.
- Dwarf planets — Small worlds like Pluto. They are not counted as one of the eight big planets.
5. A fun memory trick (mnemonic)
To remember the order of the planets, use this sentence:
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos.
The first letter of each word gives the planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
6. Simple activity you can try
- Draw the Sun on one side of a paper and make eight circles for the planets in the right order.
- Color Earth blue and green, Mars red, Saturn’s rings yellow or gray, and Jupiter with stripes.
- Look at the sky at night with a grown-up or use a free app to find bright planets like Venus or Jupiter.
That’s it — you’ve just learned the Solar System! If you want, I can give you a printable coloring page or a song to help remember the planets. Which would you like?
