Hello! Stars and Constellations
At night, you see lots of tiny lights in the sky. Those are stars. A constellation is when people imagine lines between some stars to make a picture or shape.
What that means (easy)
- Stars are like tiny lights far away.
- People look up and pretend some stars are connected, like connect-the-dots.
- When they connect the dots, the stars make a picture. That picture is a constellation.
Some fun examples
- Big Dipper — Looks like a big spoon. It is part of a bigger constellation called Ursa Major.
- Orion — Looks like a person. You can see three stars in a row for Orion's belt.
- Cassiopeia — Looks like the letter W or M.
Step-by-step stargazing game
- Go outside at night with an adult.
- Let your eyes get used to the dark for a few minutes.
- Find a few bright stars.
- Imagine a line between two stars, then to another — like connect-the-dots.
- See if the lines make a shape. Give the shape a name or story!
Easy craft to make your own constellation
Take black paper and small round stickers (or punch holes). Put some stickers on the paper to be stars. Use a pencil or white crayon to draw lines between them to make a picture. Give it a name and tell a story about it.
One more neat thing
Different people long ago made different stories for the same stars. And some constellations you see now change a little with the seasons. But the fun part is imagining pictures and telling stories about the stars!
Have fun looking up and making your own star pictures!
