Stars are very far away

Each star is like a giant sun, but much, much farther away than our sun. Because they are so far, they look like tiny dots in the sky.

Why they look like they're lined up

Even if stars are at different distances, sometimes they sit in the same direction from where we stand on Earth. That makes them look close together, like train tracks or telephone poles that seem to meet far away. We call this a line of sight — it makes stars look like they line up.

What are constellations?

Long ago, people used the brightest stars and imagined lines between them to make pictures. They drew animals, people, or things in the sky. Those sky pictures are called constellations. Different groups of people made different pictures from the same stars.

Try this simple activity (with an adult)

  1. Go outside on a dark night with an adult.
  2. Find a few bright stars. Pick three or four you like.
  3. Imagine lines between them, like connect-the-dots.
  4. Draw the dots on black paper and connect them to make your own constellation picture.

Constellations help us remember the stars. Some famous ones to look for with an adult are the Big Dipper and Orion. Have fun making your own star pictures!
