Hi! Let's learn how a beautiful butterfly grows, step by step. It starts as a squishy caterpillar and changes a lot. Read the short steps below.

  1. Egg
A tiny butterfly mom lays a little egg on a leaf. The egg is very small, like a dot.
  2. Caterpillar (larva)
The egg hatches and a squishy caterpillar comes out. Caterpillars are soft and wriggly. They eat lots and lots of leaves so they can grow bigger. That is why they look fat and squishy.
  3. Molting
As the caterpillar grows, it gets too big for its skin. It sheds its skin a few times. This is called molting.
  4. Chrysalis (pupa)
When the caterpillar is ready, it attaches to a safe place and becomes a chrysalis (also called a pupa). Inside the hard shell, the caterpillar changes. It looks very different on the inside.
  5. Metamorphosis
Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar slowly turns into a butterfly. This big change is called metamorphosis. It takes days or weeks.
  6. Butterfly
When the butterfly is ready, it breaks out of the chrysalis. Its wings are soft and wet at first. The butterfly pumps blood into its wings and waits for them to dry. Then it can fly!
  7. Life continues
The butterfly flies, drinks nectar from flowers, and later lays eggs. Then the life cycle can start again.

Fun tips: Try drawing the four main stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. Or watch a video of a caterpillar turning into a chrysalis to see metamorphosis in action.
