Snow leopards don’t "wear" spots like clothes. Their fur has spots called rosettes that are a natural part of their coat.
Here’s why the spots help them — think of hide-and-seek:
- When a snow leopard stands on rocky, snowy mountains, the colors of its fur (gray, white, and tan) match the rocks and snow. That makes it hard to see.
- The spots break up the shape of its body, so other animals can’t easily see its outline. It’s like wearing a patterned shirt in a forest — you’re harder to notice than if you wore a plain bright color.
- This helps snow leopards sneak close to animals they want to catch. It also helps them stay safe by making them harder to spot by danger.
Fun fact: baby snow leopards have even fluffier fur and more visible spots. As they grow, the spots keep helping them blend into the mountains where they live.
Try this at home: play hide-and-seek wearing a patterned sweater outside — you might find it easier to hide behind rocks or bushes!
