Baby kangaroo = joey

A baby kangaroo is called a joey (say: "JOH-ee").

Here is how a joey grows, step by step:

  1. When it is born, the joey is very tiny — about the size of a jellybean!
  2. Right after birth it crawls into its mother’s pouch on her tummy.
  3. Inside the pouch it drinks milk and stays warm while it gets bigger.
  4. After a few months the joey starts to peek out and hop out for short visits.
  5. When it is bigger (often around 6–8 months) it spends more time outside but still goes back into the pouch to sleep and feed.

Fun fact: Other animals that carry babies in pouches, like koalas and wombats, also call their babies joeys!

Try saying the word: joey — JOH-ee.
