Baby kangaroo = joey
A baby kangaroo is called a joey (say: "JOH-ee").
Here is how a joey grows, step by step:
- When it is born, the joey is very tiny — about the size of a jellybean!
- Right after birth it crawls into its mother’s pouch on her tummy.
- Inside the pouch it drinks milk and stays warm while it gets bigger.
- After a few months the joey starts to peek out and hop out for short visits.
- When it is bigger (often around 6–8 months) it spends more time outside but still goes back into the pouch to sleep and feed.
Fun fact: Other animals that carry babies in pouches, like koalas and wombats, also call their babies joeys!
Try saying the word: joey — JOH-ee.
