Why the tortoise hides
When a tortoise feels scared, it pulls its head and legs into its shell. The shell is like a little house and like armor that keeps it safe.
- The shell is part of the tortoise
It is not something the tortoise can take off. The shell grows with the tortoise, like a built-in home.
- Hiding keeps it safe
When the tortoise is tucked inside, other animals cannot reach its soft parts, so it is protected.
- No need to hurry
Inside the shell the tortoise is safe, so it can stay still and wait until it feels calm again.
- It can still breathe and rest
The tortoise can breathe and sometimes sleep while tucked in.
- When it is calm it comes out slowly
After the danger goes away, the tortoise will peek out and move slowly — that is normal for tortoises.
If you see a tortoise hiding, be kind: give it space, do not poke or shake its shell, and wait quietly. Being slow helps tortoises stay safe, and that is okay.
