Why hares have different leg sizes (for a 6-year-old)

Hares have very long back legs and shorter front legs. Each kind of leg does an important job.

  • Long back legs: These are very strong and work like big springs. They help the hare jump far and run very fast to get away from danger.
  • Short front legs: These help the hare turn quickly, slow down or stop, hold food, dig a little, and clean its fur.

Think about you jumping: when you bend your knees and push with your legs, you jump. A hare uses its long back legs the same way to make big jumps.

Try a safe pretend activity: stand up (ask an adult first), bend your knees a little and do one small hop. Pretend your legs that pushed were the hare's big back legs. Use your hands as the hare's front legs holding an imaginary carrot.

Fun fact: Hares can run faster than rabbits because their back legs are so long and powerful!
