How Tigers Hunt (for a 6-year-old)

Tigers are big wild cats. Here are three easy steps that show how they catch food:

  1. Be very quiet: Tigers walk slowly and tiptoe so the animals they hunt don’t hear them coming. Imagine playing hide-and-seek and trying not to make a sound!
  2. Use their stripes: A tiger’s orange and black stripes help it hide in tall grass and trees. The stripes break up their shape so prey can’t see them well — like wearing a camouflage costume.
  3. Surprise and pounce: When a tiger is close enough, it runs very fast and jumps to catch the other animal. This quick surprise is called a pounce.

Tigers also have very good ears and night vision, sharp teeth, and strong paws to help them. They are powerful hunters but they only hunt to eat.

Safety note: Tigers are wild animals. People should never try to go near or touch a tiger. We can watch them from far away at a zoo or learn about them in books.

Fun quiet-game to try: Pretend you are a tiger. Walk very quietly, hide behind a chair or tree (or a pillow), and then gently surprise a stuffed animal. It’s a safe way to practice how tigers sneak and pounce!
