Tigers: How They Hunt (For a 5-year-old)

Tigers are big wild cats. They catch food by being very quiet and sneaky.

Step by step

  • Hide: A tiger's stripes help it blend into grass and trees so other animals cannot see it well.
  • Sneak: The tiger walks very slowly and quietly so it does not make noise.
  • Get close: The tiger creeps up until it is almost next to the animal it wants to catch.
  • Pounce: The tiger jumps fast and grabs the animal with strong paws and sharp claws.
  • Bite: The tiger uses its big teeth to hold the animal so it cannot run away.
  • Eat and rest: After catching food, the tiger eats and then rests or hides the food for later.

Tigers usually hunt alone and often when it is dark. They are very quiet hunters.

Safety note: Tigers are wild animals. We never go near them. If you want to learn like a tiger, you can play a quiet "stalk and pounce" game at home with a grown-up watching.
