Oh no — you burned your oats! Here’s what to do right now

Don’t worry — this happens to lots of people. Follow these steps and ask an adult for help.

  1. Tell an adult right away. Stoves and hot pots can be dangerous. An adult should turn the heat off and move the pot if it’s safe.
  2. Move away from the smoke and open a window. If there’s a lot of smoke, step back so it doesn’t make you cough.
  3. If an adult says it’s safe, lift the pot off the hot burner. Don’t touch the pot yourself — it’s very hot.
  4. Check the oats:
    • If only the bottom is black and the top looks normal, an adult can scoop the good oats from the top into a clean bowl. Taste one tiny bite — if it tastes smoky or burned, don’t eat it.
    • If the oats smell very burned or everything tastes bad, it’s better to throw them away and make fresh ones.
  5. If the pot has a lot of stuck, black bits, don’t scrape them right away. An adult can soak and clean the pot later so it’s easier to wash.

How an adult can clean the burned pot (for them to do)

  • Fill the pot with hot soapy water and let it soak for a few hours or overnight.
  • If the burnt bits are still there, an adult can put water in the pot, add a splash of vinegar and a spoon of baking soda, bring it to a boil for a few minutes, then let it cool and scrub gently.
  • Rinse and wash like normal. Repeat if needed.

How to stop it from happening again

  • Set a timer on the stove or a phone for 1–2 minutes so you remember to check and stir.
  • Use low or medium heat for oats and stir every minute or so while they cook.
  • Use a bigger pot so the oats have room and won’t stick as easily.
  • Ask an adult to stay with you while cooking—especially if you need to talk on the phone, it’s safer to pause cooking first.
  • Try the microwave with a microwave-safe bowl and short intervals if that’s easier (an adult should help the first few times).

It’s okay — you did nothing terrible. Cooking takes practice, and now you know what to do next time. If you want, I can give you a super-simple recipe for oats that’s hard to burn.
