What is Critter Match?

Critter Match is a simple card game where you match animals (critters) with another card that tells something about them — like where they live, what they eat, or the sound they make. It's great for practicing memory, reading, and learning about animals.

Materials

  • Paper or index cards (about 20–30 cards)
  • Markers, crayons, or printed pictures
  • A table or floor space to lay cards out

How to make the cards

  1. Pick 8–12 animals. Example: dog, cat, frog, penguin, bee, owl, fish, turtle.
  2. For each animal make two cards: one card with the animal picture/name, and one card with something that matches (habitat, food, baby name, or sound). For example: 'Frog' and 'Pond'.
  3. Shuffle all cards together so they are mixed.

Step-by-step rules (Memory style)

  1. Lay all cards face down in rows so players cannot see them.
  2. Players take turns. On your turn flip over two cards.
  3. If the two cards match (like 'Penguin' and 'Antarctica' or 'Bee' and 'Pollinates flowers'), you keep the pair and take another turn.
  4. If the two cards do not match, flip them back face down, and the next player goes.
  5. Play until all pairs are found. The player with the most pairs wins, or play cooperatively to find all matches together.

Easy variations

  • Single-player: Time how long it takes you to find all pairs and try to beat your time.
  • Habitats only: Match animals to where they live (eg. "Turtle" + "Beach/Pond").
  • Foods only: Match animals to their food (eg. "Bee" + "Nectar").
  • Sound match: Match animal to the sound they make ("Dog" + "Bark").
  • Speed round: Lay cards face up for 15 seconds to study them, then flip face down and race to match.

Learning goals

  • Improve memory and concentration.
  • Learn animal names, habitats, foods, and sounds.
  • Practice taking turns and following rules.

Tips for success

  • Use pictures if some players can’t read yet.
  • Keep the number of pairs small the first time (6–8 pairs).
  • Make the matching clue obvious at first (like matching 'Fish' to 'Water') and make it harder later.
  • Play cooperatively with younger kids: help them by suggesting where to look.

Example card pairs (8 pairs)

  • Dog — Bark / Food: Dog food
  • Cat — Purr / Food: Fish
  • Frog — Pond
  • Penguin — Antarctica
  • Bee — Nectar / Pollinates flowers
  • Owl — Night / Hoot
  • Fish — Water
  • Turtle — Shell / Beach or Pond

Short game example

1) You and a friend make 8 animal cards and 8 matching habitat/food cards. 2) Shuffle and lay them face down. 3) You flip 'Bee' and 'Penguin' — not a match, flip back. 4) Your friend flips 'Penguin' and 'Antarctica' — match! They keep the pair. Keep playing until all pairs are found.

Have fun building your critter cards, and try different themes like farm animals, jungle animals, or sea creatures!
