Hi! Let’s learn the gusli

The gusli is a flat, wooden instrument with lots of strings. You pluck the strings to make music. It sounds soft and pretty — like a sleepy harp.

Parts of the gusli (easy words)

  • Body — the big wooden part you put on your lap.
  • Strings — the thin metal wires you pluck.
  • Tuning pegs — little knobs that make the strings higher or lower (an adult should help change these).
  • Bridge — a small piece under the strings that helps them stay in place.

How to sit and hold your gusli

  1. Sit on a chair. Put the gusli flat on your knees like a small table.
  2. Keep the side with the tuning pegs pointing away from you.
  3. One hand (usually the left) can hold the gusli gently so it does not move. The other hand (usually the right) will pluck the strings.

How to pluck the strings

  • Use your thumb or your first finger. Gently pull one string away and let it release. That makes a sound.
  • Try plucking slowly so you can hear each note clearly.
  • Don’t hit the strings hard — be gentle, like tickling a feather.

Set up a simple tuning for beginners

Ask an adult to tune 7 strings to a C major scale. Then we will call the strings by numbers from left to right:

  • 1 = C
  • 2 = D
  • 3 = E
  • 4 = F
  • 5 = G
  • 6 = A
  • 7 = B
  • (8 = high C, if you have it)

First practice (easy exercise)

  1. Pluck string 1 (C). Say "C" out loud.
  2. Pluck string 2 (D). Say "D" out loud.
  3. Pluck string 3 (E). Say "E" out loud.
  4. Now play 1-2-3-2-1 slowly, like this: C D E D C. Do this 4 times.

Your first song: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

We will use the number for each note. Remember: 1=C, 2=D, 3=E, 4=F, 5=G, 6=A.

Melody numbers for the first part (each number is one pluck):

1 1 5 5 6 6 5 | 4 4 3 3 2 2 1

Say the song words while you pluck: "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" = 1 1 5 5 6 6 5 "How I wonder what you are" = 4 4 3 3 2 2 1

Try slowly. Pluck each number and sing the word. When it sounds good, try a little faster.

Fun tips

  • Count slowly while you play: "1...2...3..."
  • Keep your fingers relaxed — stiff fingers make scratchy sounds.
  • Ask an adult to help tune the strings and show how to protect the instrument.

How to take care of your gusli

  • Keep it in a safe place — not near water or direct sun.
  • Don’t drop it. Hold it gently.
  • Wipe it with a soft cloth if it gets dusty.

A little story

Long ago, people in Russia used the gusli to tell stories and sing by the fire. Now you can make your own little stories with it, too.

Have fun! Try the exercise every day for 5–10 minutes and soon you’ll play more songs. If you want, tell me when you’re ready and I’ll give you another simple song to learn.
