The Colourful, Feisty Cassowary

Hi! Meet the cassowary — a big, colourful bird that lives in rainforests in Australia and New Guinea. It looks a bit like an ostrich or emu, but it has bright blue and red colors on its neck and a helmet-like bump on its head called a casque.

What makes a cassowary feisty?

  • It has very strong legs so it can run fast and jump.
  • It has one long, sharp claw on each foot that can be dangerous if it feels scared.
  • Usually it is shy, but it will defend itself if it thinks you are a threat.

What to do if you see one (easy steps)

  1. Stay calm. Don’t shout or wave your arms suddenly.
  2. Back away slowly — walk slowly to a safe place like a car, house or grown-up nearby. Don’t run toward it.
  3. Tell an adult right away so they can help.
  4. Do not try to feed or touch the cassowary. That can make it come closer and become dangerous.
  5. If you have a pet, get the pet inside so it won’t scare or chase the bird.

Fun facts

  • Cassowaries help rainforest trees grow by spreading the seeds of the fruit they eat.
  • They can be taller than you — up to about 1.5 to 2 metres tall.
  • Baby cassowaries have stripes like little zebras to hide them in the leaves.
  • Scientists aren’t 100% sure what the casque is for — maybe to push through plants, make sounds louder, or show other cassowaries who they are.

Remember: cassowaries are amazing and important animals, but they are not pets. If you ever see one, be calm, back away, and tell an adult. If you like, draw a picture of a cassowary so you can remember its bright colours!
