The Colourful, Feisty Cassowary
Hi! Meet the cassowary — a big, colourful bird that lives in rainforests in Australia and New Guinea. It looks a bit like an ostrich or emu, but it has bright blue and red colors on its neck and a helmet-like bump on its head called a casque.
What makes a cassowary feisty?
- It has very strong legs so it can run fast and jump.
- It has one long, sharp claw on each foot that can be dangerous if it feels scared.
- Usually it is shy, but it will defend itself if it thinks you are a threat.
What to do if you see one (easy steps)
- Stay calm. Don’t shout or wave your arms suddenly.
- Back away slowly — walk slowly to a safe place like a car, house or grown-up nearby. Don’t run toward it.
- Tell an adult right away so they can help.
- Do not try to feed or touch the cassowary. That can make it come closer and become dangerous.
- If you have a pet, get the pet inside so it won’t scare or chase the bird.
Fun facts
- Cassowaries help rainforest trees grow by spreading the seeds of the fruit they eat.
- They can be taller than you — up to about 1.5 to 2 metres tall.
- Baby cassowaries have stripes like little zebras to hide them in the leaves.
- Scientists aren’t 100% sure what the casque is for — maybe to push through plants, make sounds louder, or show other cassowaries who they are.
Remember: cassowaries are amazing and important animals, but they are not pets. If you ever see one, be calm, back away, and tell an adult. If you like, draw a picture of a cassowary so you can remember its bright colours!
