Numbats love termites!
Hi! A numbat is a small animal from Australia. Numbats eat termites — lots and lots of them. When we say they eat termites by the bucketful, we mean they eat many, many termites every day.
How a numbat eats termites — step by step:
- Find the termites: Numbats sniff and look for tiny tunnels made by termites under bark or in wood.
- Use a long, sticky tongue: A numbat has a long tongue that can slip into the tiny tunnels.
- Pick up lots of termites fast: The sticky tongue licks up many termites one after another.
- Eat all day: Numbats are busy during the day and keep hunting so they can eat enough termites.
Fun way to imagine it: if termites were tiny cereal bits, a numbat would eat a huge bowl — like filling a small bucket — every day!
Quick fact: Numbats are special and not very many are left in the wild, so people try to help protect them and their homes.
