Who is a baby rabbit?
A baby rabbit is a very young rabbit. People call baby rabbits "kits" or sometimes "kittens" or "bunnies." They are tiny, soft, and often sleepy!
Step 1 — What a baby rabbit looks like
- Very small—about the size of your hand when they are newborns.
- Some are born with little fur and closed eyes. After a week or two they open their eyes and grow fur.
- They have long ears (that will grow more) and little noses that twitch.
Step 2 — Where baby rabbits live
- Wild baby rabbits live in nests (called a burrow or a scrape) under grass or in a hole in the ground.
- Pet baby rabbits live in a cozy hutch or a safe place inside your home with soft bedding.
Step 3 — What baby rabbits eat
- Newborn kits drink their mothers milk for the first few weeks.
- After that they start to eat hay, special rabbit pellets, and vegetables when they are older. They always need fresh water.
Step 4 — How to be gentle and safe
- If you see a wild baby rabbit, tell an adult. Dont touch it unless an adult says it is safe — the mother may be nearby and will come back.
- If you have a pet baby rabbit, be very gentle: scoop it up with two hands, keep it close to your body, and sit down so it wont get dropped.
- Always wash your hands after touching animals and ask a grown-up for help with feeding or holding a baby rabbit.
Baby rabbits are sweet but need gentle care. If you ever find one and you are not sure what to do, always ask a grown-up or a wildlife helper for help.
