What is a "spread"?

A spread is the two pages you see together when you open a book. Imagine opening a book like a big picture window — the left page and the right page make one big picture when they are side by side.

What is a "game spread"?

A game spread is a game that uses both pages together. Picture an adventure that starts on the left page and finishes on the right page, or a hidden-object game where you look for things that are spread across both pages.

Fun kinds of game spreads

  • Seek-and-find: Hide little stars or animals across both pages. The player finds them all.
  • Maze: Draw a path on the left page that continues on the right, and find the way to the treasure.
  • Spot the difference: Draw two big pictures that look almost the same and find the differences.
  • Matching: Put pictures on the left page that match shapes or shadows on the right page.

Make your own game spread — 6 easy steps

  1. Get your things: Two pages of a notebook or a folded piece of paper, crayons or markers, stickers.
  2. Pick a theme: Pirates, space, a playground, or a zoo. Say what your game is about: find treasures, spot animals, or follow the path.
  3. Draw one big picture: Use both pages to make one big scene. For example, draw a big island that goes from the left page to the right page.
  4. Hide the game bits: Put 5 stars, 3 animals, or 1 treasure chest across both pages. Make some on the left and some on the right so players must look at the whole spread.
  5. Write simple rules: Use short words: "Find all 5 stars!" or "Help the bunny get to the carrot. Start on the left." Ask a grown-up to help write the words.
  6. Play and share: Let a friend or grown-up play. After playing, you can change the game and hide things in new spots.

Quick example: Treasure Hunt Spread

1) Draw an island across both pages. 2) Hide 6 tiny shells: 3 on the left, 3 on the right. 3) Rule: "Find all 6 shells and color them gold!"

Tips

  • Ask an adult to help fold paper or write words.
  • Use stickers for hiding things if you don’t want to draw tiny objects.
  • Make the pictures big and colorful so they are fun to look at.

Have fun making your own book games! Try different ideas and see which game spread you like best.
