Shark Fins
A shark fin is the part you might see sticking out of the water. Sharks have several fins that help them move and stay balanced.
Where the fins are
- Dorsal fin - the big fin on the shark's back (top).
- Pectoral fins - the side fins that look like wings.
- Tail fin - the fin at the back that pushes the shark forward.
What fins do
- Help the shark balance so it does not tip over.
- Help the shark steer and turn left or right.
- The tail fin helps the shark swim faster by pushing the water.
If you see a fin in the water
- Stay calm and go to a safe spot.
- Tell an adult right away.
- Remember: not every fin means danger — sometimes it is a dolphin or a harmless fish.
Fun activity
Try this: draw a long oval for the shark body. Add a triangle on top for the dorsal fin, two small triangles on the sides for pectoral fins, and a split tail at the back. Color it however you like!
