Moray Eel Fun Facts (for a 6-year-old)

Hi! A moray eel (say: mor-ee) is a long fish that sometimes looks like a snake. Here are some cool and easy facts:

  1. Where they live: Moray eels live in warm oceans and like to hide in holes or rock cracks on coral reefs.
  2. They like to hide: They stay in a cozy home in a rock and peep their head out to watch for food.
  3. They open their mouth a lot: When you see a moray with its mouth open, it is breathing — not smiling. It moves its mouth to pull water over its gills.
  4. Sharp teeth: Morays have lots of sharp teeth to catch fish and crabs. That is why you should never touch one in the wild.
  5. Big and small: Some morays are small, and some can grow very long — as long as a car (the biggest can be about 4 meters long).
  6. Pretty colors: They come in many colors and patterns — spots, stripes, and bright skins that help them hide or scare others away.
  7. Cleaning friends: Little fish called cleaner fish swim into a moray's mouth and clean it. The moray stays still and lets them help — that is a neat friendship!
  8. Nocturnal: Many moray eels hunt at night when it is dark and quiet in the reef.
  9. Baby eels: Baby morays look like thin, clear ribbons when they float in the ocean before growing up.
  10. Stay safe: Morays can bite if scared. Always watch animals from far away and never try to touch them without a grown-up.

Try this: Pretend to be a moray eel — hide behind a pillow, peek out, and open your mouth (pretend) to "breathe." Or draw a colorful moray with big teeth!
