Moray Eel Fun Facts!

Hi! Here are some fun facts about moray eels made just for a 5-year-old.

  1. They look like long fish. Moray eels have long, skinny bodies and they wiggle to swim.
  2. They live in rock homes. They hide in holes between rocks and coral like little houses.
  3. They come in many colors. Some are brown, green, yellow, or spotted — very pretty!
  4. They often keep their mouth open. That helps them breathe. It can look like they are smiling or being mean, but it is how they breathe.
  5. They have a helper mouth inside. Moray eels have a second set of jaws inside their throat that helps them swallow food — like a tiny helper!
  6. They eat fish and crabs. They catch food that swims close to their home.
  7. They live in warm seas and reefs. You find them in oceans near warm places where there are lots of rocks and coral.
  8. Baby eels are tiny and ribbon-like. The babies look like little flat ribbons when they are very small.
  9. Watch, don’t touch. If you see a moray eel while snorkeling or at the aquarium, look from far away and don’t touch it so both you and the eel stay safe.

Which color moray eel would you draw? Try drawing a spotted one or a bright green one!
