Hello! Let’s find the smooth plant on your windowsill. We’ll go slowly and safely so you don’t get poked.

Safety first: Do not touch any plant that looks sharp or prickly with your bare hands. Use a pencil, ruler, or ask an adult to help. Wear gloves if you must touch.

  1. Look from a little way back. Stand a step away so you can see all the plants. Which one looks softer or shinier compared to the others?
  2. Check the leaves.
    • Smooth leaves: flat, even surface, maybe shiny or soft, and edges are rounded (not sharp).
    • Prickly leaves or plants: have needles, spines, pointy edges, or tiny sharp hairs.
  3. Look at the stems. Smooth plants usually have round, bendy stems that don’t have thorns. Prickly plants (like cactuses or thorny roses) have obvious spikes or thorns on the stems.
  4. Do a safe poke test using a tool. Hold a pencil or a ruler and gently touch the leaf or stem tip. If the tool feels pokey or you see tiny spikes, it’s prickly. If the tool slides over the surface, the plant is likely smooth. (Ask an adult to help the first time.)
  5. Use a magnifying glass or take a photo. A close look can show tiny hairs (fuzzy but not sharp) or real spines. Take a picture and zoom in to check textures.
  6. Compare by touch carefully if an adult is with you. With gloves on, gently touch one leaf of each plant. The smooth plant will feel soft, waxy, or even a little slippery. The prickly one will hurt or feel rough and pointy.

Quick checklist you can use:

  • Leaf surface: smooth or pointy?
  • Leaf edge: rounded or sharp?
  • Stem: soft or thorny?
  • Shiny or dull?

Why some plants are prickly: plants grow spines to protect themselves from animals that might eat them. Smooth plants often don’t need that protection, or they store water in thick, soft leaves.

Fun idea: Mark the smooth plant with a sticky note and draw it in a little notebook. Describe how it feels and looks—this helps you remember what “smooth” looks like next time.

Have fun exploring, and always be careful around plants that look sharp!
