What does 'opposite' mean?

Opposites are words that mean very different things. For example, hot is the opposite of cold, and up is the opposite of down.

Look at the phrase: 'sitting parrot'

Here, 'sitting' describes what the parrot is doing. To find an opposite, ask: what would the parrot be doing that is the most different from sitting?

  • Flying — This is a very good opposite if you think of the parrot sitting on a branch versus being up in the air. If the parrot is sitting on a perch, the opposite is that it is flying.
  • Standing — This can also be an opposite in some situations. Sitting vs standing are often opposites when we talk about positions on a surface (like the floor or a branch).
  • Moving (walking, hopping) — If you mean 'not staying still', then walking or hopping could be considered opposites of sitting.

Best choice: For most pictures or stories, the simplest opposite of a 'sitting parrot' is a 'flying parrot' because sitting means it is on something and not in the air.

Quick quiz — choose the opposite:

  1. The parrot is sitting on a branch. Opposite: A) Sitting B) Flying C) Sleeping — Answer: B) Flying
  2. The parrot is sitting on the floor with its feet under it. Opposite: A) Standing B) Sitting C) Sleeping — Answer: A) Standing
  3. The parrot is sitting quietly and not moving. Opposite: A) Quiet B) Moving/flying C) Still — Answer: B) Moving/flying

Fun activity: Draw two pictures: one of a parrot sitting on a branch, and another of the opposite. If you pick flying, draw the parrot in the sky with wings spread. If you pick standing, draw it on the branch or ground standing up.

If you want, tell me which opposite you chose and I can give feedback or more practice!
