What is a lighthouse?

A lighthouse is a tall building near the sea with a very bright light on top. It helps boats and ships know where the land is and where it is safe to go.

Parts of a lighthouse

  • Base or foundation - The strong bottom that keeps the lighthouse standing, even in big waves.
  • Tower - The tall part that lifts the light up high so ships can see it from far away.
  • Lantern room - The glass room at the top where the light sits.
  • Light and lens - A bright lamp plus a special glass lens (called a Fresnel lens) that makes the light shine far and clear.
  • Keeper's house - Where the person who looked after the light used to live. Many lighthouses are automatic now, so keepers are not always there.
  • Foghorn - A loud horn that makes noise in fog so ships can hear where the land is when they cannot see the light.

How a lighthouse helps ships (step by step)

  1. At night, the bright light shines out across the water. Ships see the light and know where land is, so they don't crash into rocks.
  2. In fog, the foghorn sounds so ships can hear the shore even if they cannot see the light.
  3. Each lighthouse often has its own pattern of flashes or color. This pattern tells sailors which lighthouse it is and helps them know exactly where they are.
  4. The lighthouse stands at dangerous places like rocky coasts, harbor entrances, or the end of a point of land to warn ships to stay away from danger.

How the light works (in simple words)

Long ago, lighthouses used oil lamps. Today they usually use electric lamps. A special glass lens catches the light and makes it shine a long way. Sometimes the light turns or flashes so sailors can see its pattern.

Where you can find lighthouses

Near the sea, at harbors, on islands, or on rocks sticking out of the water. You might see one when you visit the beach!

Fun facts

  • Some lighthouses are very old — hundreds of years!
  • The tallest lighthouses are as tall as a small skyscraper.
  • Each lighthouse often has a different blink pattern so sailors can tell them apart.

Try this easy activity

Draw your own lighthouse: draw a tall tower, add windows, draw the lantern room on top, and color a bright beam of light coming out. Think about where your lighthouse would stand — on a rocky cliff or next to a friendly beach?
