Porcupines: Two Kinds for a 7-year-old

Porcupines are big, prickly rodents. There are two main kinds: New World porcupines (from the Americas) and Old World porcupines (from Africa, Europe, and Asia). Here are the easy, important differences.

1) Where they live

  • New World porcupines: live in trees in North and South America. They like forests.
  • Old World porcupines: live on the ground in Africa, Europe, and Asia. They make burrows or live in rocky places.

2) How they move

  • New World: good climbers. They use their tail like a hand to hold branches (this is called a prehensile tail).
  • Old World: walk on the ground. Their tails do not grab branches.

3) Their quills

  • Both kinds have quills for protection. Quills are really stiff hair.
  • New World quills can be a little barbed and come out easily when a predator touches them.
  • Old World quills are thicker and often in big clusters. They also come out if an animal gets pricked.
  • Neither kind can throw quills — the quills just fall out or stick in if they touch something.

4) Size and food

  • New World: usually smaller, eat leaves, bark, and sometimes fruit.
  • Old World: often bigger, eat roots, bulbs, and other things they find on the ground.

Fun facts

  • Porcupines are rodents — relatives of mice and beavers.
  • They are mostly active at night (nocturnal), so you might not see them during the day.
  • If a porcupine feels scared, it will turn its back and show its quills to say, "Stay away!"

Quick summary

New World porcupines live in trees in the Americas and can use their tail to hold branches. Old World porcupines live on the ground in Africa, Europe, and Asia and have bigger, thicker quills. Both use quills to keep safe, and neither can throw them.
