Where does wind come from?

The wind is moving air. It happens because the sun warms some places more than others.

Easy steps:

  1. The sun warms the ground and water.
  2. Warm air gets light and goes up, like a balloon.
  3. Cooler air moves in to take the warm air's place.
  4. That moving air is the wind you feel on your face.

Little story: Imagine the sun is a big lamp. It warms the beach faster than the sea. The warm air above the beach goes up. The cool air from the sea runs in to take its spot. That running air is the breeze!

Fun things to try:

  • Hold a pinwheel and watch it spin when the wind blows.
  • Make a simple windsock from a paper bag and ribbons to see which way the wind blows.
  • Stand outside and feel the breeze on your cheek—try blowing a dandelion or a feather.

Simple comparison: Wind is like when you blow on a bowl of soup — the air moves from one place to another.
