10 Super Fun, Short Moray Eel Facts (for a 7-year-old)
Here are ten quick and fun facts. Read them one at a time and pick your favorite!
- They look like snakes, but they are fish. Moray eels have long, snake-like bodies but breathe with gills like other fish.
- They live in warm oceans. You can find them hiding in rocks and coral reefs.
- They like to hide. Moray eels hide in holes and wait to catch food that swims by.
- Many are night hunters. They mostly come out to hunt when it’s dark.
- They eat fish, crabs, and octopus. Morays are meat-eaters and snap up their dinner with sharp teeth.
- They have a second set of jaws inside their throat. This extra "helper" jaw shoots forward to grab food — like superhero jaws!
- They come in cool colors and patterns. Some are bright green, brown, spotted, or striped.
- Some moray eels get very big. A few can grow as long as a small car is wide (about 10 feet or 3 meters).
- Cleaner fish and shrimp help them stay healthy. Little fish and shrimp clean parasites off morays, and the moray stays calm for them.
- They can bite if scared, so watch from far away. Morays don’t want people to touch them — it’s best to look and not try to grab them.
How to learn them step by step:
