The Moon
The Moon is a big round rock that goes around Earth. It is like Earth’s friend in space.
Here are easy steps to understand the Moon:
- It is round: The Moon is like a big ball in the sky.
- It shines at night: The Moon does not make its own light. It shines because the Sun lights it up and the light bounces to us.
- It moves: The Moon goes around Earth, so sometimes it is in different places in the sky.
- It changes shape: Some nights the Moon looks full and round. Other nights it looks like a banana (a crescent). Sometimes we cannot see it at all. These different looks are called phases.
- It has holes: The Moon has big bumps and holes called craters. Rocks from space hit the Moon long ago and made those holes.
Fun things you can do:
- Look for the Moon tonight. Wave or say hello!
- Draw the Moon each night and watch how its shape changes.
- Play with a flashlight and a ball: hold the ball as the Moon and shine the flashlight like the Sun. Walk around the ball to see how the bright part changes.
Short and sweet: the Moon is a rocky friend in the sky that reflects sunlight, moves around Earth, and shows us different shapes. It is always there, even when we cannot see it.
Good night, little moon watcher!
