How Do Plants Grow?
Hi there! Let’s learn how a tiny seed becomes a big plant. Plants need five simple things: a seed, soil, water, sunlight, and air. Ready? Let’s go step by step!
1. The Seed
A seed is like a baby plant sleeping. Inside the seed is a little plant and food to help it wake up.
2. Put the Seed in Soil
We put the seed in soft soil. The soil keeps the seed safe and warm.
3. Give Water
Water wakes the seed up. Don’t give too much—just a little so the soil is damp like a sponge.
4. Sunshine and Air
The sun gives the plant energy. The air gives the plant something called carbon dioxide that it needs to make food.
5. Roots, Sprout, and Leaves
- Roots grow down into the soil to drink water and hold the plant up.
- Shoot or sprout pushes up out of the soil.
- Leaves grow and use sun, air, and water to make food so the plant can grow big and strong.
6. Flowers and Seeds
Some plants make flowers. Flowers can turn into fruit with seeds inside. Those seeds can grow into new plants—just like the first seed did!
Fun, Easy Activity: Grow a Bean in a Clear Cup
- Get a clear cup, a paper towel, and a bean seed (like a lima or kidney bean).
- Wet the paper towel and fold it to fit inside the cup.
- Place the seed between the paper towel and the cup wall so you can see it.
- Keep the paper towel damp and put the cup where it gets light but not hot sun.
- Watch every day — you will see the root and sprout grow!
