Big Crabs — Fun Easy Facts

Hi! Here are some cool crab facts made just for a 6-year-old. Short sentences and simple steps.

  1. Some crabs are very big.

There is a crab called the Japanese spider crab. Its legs can spread very wide — almost as wide as a small truck is long! Another big one is the coconut crab. It can be heavy and climb trees.

  2. Crabs have claws.

The claws are like hands. Crabs use them to pick up food, hold things, and sometimes to scare other animals. But their claws can pinch, so don't touch a crab you find.

  3. They have ten legs.

Count with me: 2 claws + 8 walking legs = 10 legs. That makes them deca-pods (ten feet) — a big word meaning ten legs!

  4. They walk sideways.

Crab legs bend in a way that makes it easier for them to walk to the side instead of forwards. So you often see them scooting sideways on the sand.

  5. Crabs grow and change shells.

When a crab grows too big for its shell, it sheds the old shell. This is called molting. After molting the crab is soft for a little while, so it hides until its new shell hardens.

  6. Where they live.

Many big crabs live in the ocean or on beaches. Some, like the coconut crab, live on land and can climb trees to get coconuts.

  7. What they eat.

Crabs eat lots of things: plants, small animals, dead fish, and sometimes fruit like coconuts. They are good at finding food on the beach and in the water.

  8. Are they scary?

They might look a little scary because they are big and have claws, but most crabs are shy. They would rather run away than fight. Still, always watch from a distance and never pick up a crab you don't know.

Easy, fun things to do

  • Make crab hands: put your hands together, thumbs down, wiggle your fingers like crab legs!
  • Draw a crab: big round body, 2 eyes on sticks, 2 claws, and 8 legs.
  • Count legs: draw 10 circles and color them as you count 1–10.
  • Beach rule: look, don’t touch. Tell a grown-up if you see a crab up close.
